A new poem from PoemsofaDad: Moving

Dear friends,

We have just moved. From Switzerland to the US. What a blessing to have spent time in Switzerland over the past few years and now to have the chance to spend some more time in the beautiful USA. But also, what a logistical effort…

And that’s what my new poem entitled Moving partly conveys, as well as the fear a dad has of having made the wrong choices and having not spent enough quality moments in the busiest of time with his little wonderful kids.

Coming soon: PoemsofaDaughter and PoemsofaSon…

It would seem this poem writing gig has become a family affair.

My two little sweethearts, who were my motivation for PoemsofaDad (waaaaaay) back in 2018, now want to get a piece of the action.

So, coming soon, PoemsofaDaughter (age ten) and PoemsofaSon (age eight) right here at PoemsofaDad…

Stay tuned. Their stuff is waaaay better than mine!

Warmest wishes,

JR

A poem from PoemsofaDad – How I came to know myself (and now as a podcast read by me).

Dear friends, dear followers,

First of all, thank you! Thank you for sticking with PoemsofaDad during my recent period of silence. Its been a very busy year thus far and, while I’ve been writing, I’ve not been posting.  I hope you have, at least, been enjoying my library of poems in the meantime.

Secondly, I hope you are all staying safe and healthy during the ongoing pandemic. I am thinking of you, wherever you are, and in whatever situation you and your loved ones find yourselves.

Well, I am now out from the veritable fog of my poetic posting absence and have a new poem for you – and enough for about a year of monthly posts :-). So, lets start with ‘How I came to know myself‘.

Heather in Your Sparkle

Sparkling in luminescent arcs of light,
you dance your way through uncut heather.
Flowers and summer’s sun,
fill every space between us,
in body and now in time.
Pastel paintings of precious moments,
together,
crowding every crevice of my memory.

Little joy like a bundle, untied and untouched.
Raw and wild.
Perfect like the uncarved block.
An emotion welled up from deep within the ocean of your being,
tidal wave a flowin’, bringing happiness to my heart,
into every other undecided empty space,
letting it overpower me, own me.
Letting go of some way,
some how,
I thought as an adult I should be.

So deeply defined.
So vast in its perfection.
So esoteric in what it is and where it comes.
So distant and untouchable,
yet so present and so real.
The love beneath the joy.
The all beneath the smiles.
The greater presence beneath,
heather’s diamond-like reflection,
in your sparkling,
laughing,
loving eyes.

“Cold memories” in a hot summer… new poem from PoemsofaDad

Dear followers,

Here’s a poem for the hot summer, called Cold Memories, inspired by my time in a particular post-war country many years ago.

This week’s poem by PoemsofaDad – its a little heavy: ‘Fleeting Picture’

Dear friends,

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy during the ongoing pandemic. Its getting better in some places, but worse in others. I am thinking of you, wherever you are, and in whatever situation you and your loved ones find yourselves.

A little heavier a poem this week: ‘Fleeting Picture‘. One that reflects those dark and painful moments in parenting, when our insecurities (and mistakes) get the better of us, and we question (always too much so) whether we are on the right track.
